Silverman - Speed of Life part two

With Speed of life part two Silverman prove more than ever that in the depths of a soul destroyed, beauty is around. Anna Dennis can make Beth Gibbons seem like a lucky punter in the love stakes but her voice cuts your heart open while the music pours optimism into the wound.

Hearing an honest soul laid bare is a daunting experience. Speed of life part two has the contents to be sat in the history books alongside Joy Division's "Unknown Pleasures". So much so that there are songs I won't be able to play again for who knows how many years, it's too raw an emotion. It is a slice of tender humanity on a silver disc. The side of life we mask with coldness and shut away out of fear. The universal expression of the heart laid down so decisively that no-one can escape untouched. We are all mortal.

Drummer and part time vocal accompaniment Matin has said before that he formed Silverman as a vessel for Anna's voice. In doing so he built an arc. An arc safe from the storms of heaven to protect a delicate siren. He could search the world and never find a pair.

Musically it is solid. Contemporary yet timeless, fantastically understated and overwhelmingly powerful. The line up is classic. Speed of life has mastered all the angles that make good bands great. This band are very important.

Anybody who ever owned a Sundays record should own a Silverman one. "Don't leave this world without me" is the greatest single since The Smiths "There is a light that never goes out" and I will argue that to the death.
